Infrastructure & Accessibility

The Mulligan highway connects Cooktown to Cairns a distance of 334kms ( 3 1/2 hrours drive).

Other major roads in the shire are the Penninsula Development Road which provides access to Cape York and the scenic coastal "Bloomfield Track" to Cairns.

Cooktown boasts an airport with daily flights to Cairns with Skytrans 35 mins travel. 

The region is also serviced by a bus service from Cairns to Cooktown via both the coastal Bloomfield Track  (seasonal) and inland ( Mulligan Highway) routes with connections enroute.

Regular freight services, by road and air transport, are provided by several locally based companies. A local taxi service and car hire operate in Cooktown.

Cooktown wharf services the professional and recreational fisherman and other users while nearby Cape Flattery, a silica mine has commercial export facilities.

Cooktown, Laura, Lakeland and Coen have reticulated town water

Cooktown is serviced by a sewerage system.

The regions electricity demands are met by Ergon Energy. A windfarm at Archer Point is in the planning stages.
