At the time of the 2006 census 17.6% of residents were employed in agriculture, foresty or fishing , 11.2% in retail and 10.7% in manufacturing.

The Cassowary Coast region's agricultural sector is highly labour intensive and permanent and casual labour in unskilled and manual work is regularly in demand. The local newspapers, accomodation facilities and the visitor information centres carry lists of employment opportunities.

Major employers in the area include the sugar mills, local and state government, banana farms, transport and aged care.

Several Jobs Services Australia providers have a presence in the area.

Centrelink also has an office in Innisfail.
